
Hearing Loss: A Missing Piece in Dementia Prevention
Based on data from a recent study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, up to 1 in 3 dementia cases in older adults could potentially be prevented if hearing loss were addressed at the population level. Even mild or early-stage hearing loss has been linked to an increased risk of dementia, underscoring the importance of early detection and intervention.
Unlike some other risk factors, treating hearing loss even in a patient’s 70s or 80s can still have a meaningful impact. While public health campaigns often emphasize exercise, diet, and blood pressure, hearing health deserves a place on that list.
